LE PROCOPE, first café in PARIS, opened in 1686

Yesterday, Little Cock and me had dinner in

LE PROCOPE, a restaurant since 1686,
13, rue de l’Ancienne Comédie 75006 PARIS,
tél. 01 40 46 79 00

“The Procope, the oldest restaurant in Paris and the first café, opened in 1686. The owner was Francesco Procopio Dei Coltelli. In 1689, the Comédie-Française moved to opposite the Procope and, between shows, the café became THE café for theatre-goers and actors. Voltaire, Rousseau and Diderot were loyal regulars and the Encyclopaedia was born under the crystal centre-lights of the Procope. During the revolution, Danton, Marat could all be found here. Benjamin Franklin even fine-tuned the American constitution here.”

Very famous during the Revolution and the Empire. Napoleon’s marechals used to go often there. Some say that there is a ghost in the Murat’s salon.

Lettle Cock ate :

– a « Gratinée Odéon », which is an onion soap, with bread and on roasted cheese ;
– a filet Bar (fish)
– a poached pear with vanilla cream and coconut.

Little Cock did like .

And I ate a « plateau de fruits de mer ». Very good, very fresh sea food. Best, I ever eat.

The service was excellent. : attentive and discreet.

After, we took a walk in Odéon area and I bought some movies DVD:

A clockwork Orange, 1971, Stantley Kubrick’s movie:

“In future Britain, charismatic delinquent Alex DeLarge is jailed and later volunteers for an experimental aversion therapy developed by the government in an effort to solve society’s crime problem… but not all goes to plan. “

20 30 40, 2004, Sylvia Chang’s movie
” Three women in different stages of their lives – 20, 30, 40 -face the hardships of the female existence.”

The Majestic , 2002, Frank Darabont’s movie, with the genial Jim Carrey.

Play it again, 1972, Herbert Ross, with Woody Allen and Diane Keaton. Very funny !

  1. what did they serve?

  2. They served the good things, I explained. Sea food, very fresh and tasty (oysters, messel, shrimps, crab, fish etc). You should go there, taste the food and watch the restaurant. There is a good mood.

  3. You mentioned that it is also a cafe, is it a place where you can just sit and drink a coffee rather than dining there?

  4. People rather go there to eat.
